Mothers and Meals
May 5, 2008
I remember being a new mom and ravenously hungry, but unable to eat at the moment because my baby was even hungrier than I. So I sat down and nursed him...and my mother, half as a joke, cobbled together a lunch, took up a spoon, and began to feed me.
So much of parenting is about feeding – the tiny toddler portions, the delicacy for the child at home with a cold, the heaping plateful consumed by the active adolescent. All come under the general category of Mom's specialties.
So it's no wonder that two of our most enduring Mother's Day rituals – serving Mom breakfast in bed, and taking Mom out to dinner – revolve around meals. Turning the tables (or the breakfast tray) for this one day at least acknowledges our history as the recipient of thousands upon thousands of mother's meals.
So thank you, moms, everywhere. It's time to tuck in your napkin, click your glasses together, smile at each other and lift your own spoons. Bon appetit everyone!
